Casey Whelan
Son of Harriet Whelan

I have three childhood memories – two good, one not so good:

1. We took a family trip when I was in my early elementary days. It was my Mom (Harriet), Grandmother (Adele), Sister (Stacy) and I. (I believe my Dad was working on his Master’s in Aberdeen while we were gallivanting around the country) We traveled from Berlin to Mpls into Wisconsin and back. I have two very fond Memories. The first was going to the top of the Foshay Tower in Mpls. I believe we went there with Uncle Charlie. I remember that visit each time I see the Foshay – which is quit often since I have a view of the downtown skyline from my 12th floor office in Plymouth, MN. The second memory is the fireflies we saw in Minnesota at Aunt Ester’s. I had never seen them before and the beauty made a lasting impression. Very fun trip……

2. We were in Berlin for a visit – not sure the time of year. I was elementary school age. I had spent the day playing with Gary and Kevin and had a great time. As the evening rolled around I decided to spend the night at Blaine and Audrey’s rather than at Grandma’s. (Better plumbing at Blaine’s) After supper we found a bag of “red licorice” and ate the whole bag. We went to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night with a very upset stomach! I didn’t want to wake up Audrey so I decided to go back to Grandma’s house where Mom and Dad were staying. Along the way I vomited (sorry) red stuff. I arrived at Grandma’s, went down stairs and woke up Mom. I was covered in “red stuff” which my Mom originally thought was blood. It all got sorted out and the next day I went back to Blaine’s to play with Gary and Kevin.
